height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/sargassosea-crop.png\" alt=\"Map of Sargasso Sea, surrounded by continents of North America, Africa, Europe, and South America.\" \/><\/a>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: L\u00f3pez Miranda JL, Celis LB, Est\u00e9vez M, Ch\u00e1vez V, van Tussenbroek BI, Uribe-Mart\u00ednez A, Cuevas E, Rosillo Pantoja I, Masia L, Cauich-Kantun C and Silva RVectorised by SyntaxTerror, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The viral infection of blue-green algae in the ocean stimulates ecosystem productivity and contributes to a rich oxygen band in the water, according to a new interdisciplinary study led by researchers at the University of Maryland and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt is really a microbial planet we live on, and viruses are part of that process,\u201d said Steven Wilhelm, the Kenneth and Blaire Mossman Professor in UT\u2019s Department of Microbiology and one of the study\u2019s senior authors. \u201cSometimes their activity is as much about stimulating growth and production as it is about sickness and disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-title-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-78047dc7492c57167ba47d0e09c6b898\">Wilhelm served as chief scientist on the National Science Foundation research cruise to the Sargasso Sea that led to the paper published on January 12, 2026, in the journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-025-67002-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Nature Communications<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em>The Sargasso Sea is a region of the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean about 600 miles east of Florida and a geographical anomaly among bodies of water\u2014it\u2019s bounded by ocean currents rather than land.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-title-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2a8efe567e1e04178bcf822fd8b42b24\">While traveling on the research vessel\u00a0<em>Atlantic Explorer<\/em>\u00a0in October 2019, the researchers completed around-the-clock RNA sequencing surveys of the microbiology at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bios.asu.edu\/bats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study<\/a>, which has collected physical, biological, and chemical data on the ocean for nearly four decades.<\/p>\n\n<p>The new study shows how virus infection of the cyanobacterium\u00a0<em>Prochlorococcus<\/em>\u00a0releases nutrients that fuel microbial growth, contributing to enhanced oxygen levels tens of meters below the surface.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-aff446b77fea565aa5261d92a4eb4057\" style=\"color: #010101;\">\u201cViruses transform the fate of cells, populations, and ecosystems,\u201d said study co-senior author Joshua Weitz, a professor in the Department of Biology and the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/ihc.umd.edu\">University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing<\/a><\/strong><\/span> (<strong>UM-IHC<\/strong>) and holder of the Clark Leadership Chair in Data Analytics. \u201cIn this case, we identified a link between viral infections and enhanced oxygen and microbial activity 50 meters below the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-12-114956.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"374\" height=\"241\" class=\"wp-image-22437 alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-12-114956.png\" alt=\"Group of student and faculty researchers gathered in lab in front of equipment.\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 374px; Photo courtesy of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"has-title-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bddb4212c28aec933747fecd194fa80e\">The paper shows a direct link between two major tenets of oceanographic processes: the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/micro.utk.edu\/wilhelm-receives-john-h-martin-award-for-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">viral shunt<\/a>,\u201d first described by Wilhelm and Curtis Suttle (University of British Columbia) in 1999, and the microbial loop in the ocean\u2019s food web.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cBy analyzing large-scale data on cellular and viral activity over day-night cycles, including the infection status and abundances of viruses that infect cyanobacteria, we are able to identify the imprint of viral infections at system-scales,\u201d said study co-senior author Joshua S. Weitz. \u201cViral infection appears to enhance the recycling of carbon and nutrients by other microbes, driving productivity and shedding new light on historical trends that indicate a viral role in shaping ecosystem functioning below the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Researchers completed the RNA sequencing and additional analyses at UT.
