The topic focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis inaugural session represents an exciting step toward building a broader CME initiative at UM-IHC\u2014one that empowers clinicians and researchers to navigate, and lead within, the rapidly evolving world of AI in medicine,\u201d said CME Director,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/profiles\/ratzki-leewing-alexandria\/\"><strong>Alexandria Ratzki-Leewing, PhD<\/strong><\/a>, UM-IHC faculty and University of Maryland Medical School (UMSOM) Assistant Professor of Epidemiology &amp; Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-Tools-in-EHR_102825_A7402053.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" src=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-Tools-in-EHR_102825_A7402053.jpg\" alt=\"Four panelists seated in front of a screen, in the front of the room. Male panelist all the way to the left speaks.\" class=\"wp-image-21656\" style=\"width:495px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>More than 40 clinical professionals gathered in a sunlit conference room in the Institute\u2019s North Bethesda headquarters for an afternoon of presentations and discussions on the development of AI tools for the clinic and strategies for shaping their responsible, equitable, and impactful use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in 2022, the UM-IHC leverages the power of large-scale data science, including AI, to address the biggest generational challenges in healthcare, and researches how computational technologies can be applied to biomedical science.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UM-IHC developed and is now offering the new CME session in AI because \u201cAI tools are not only rapidly evolving, but they are already being deployed in clinical settings, such as at University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC),\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/profiles\/maron-bradley\/\"><strong>Bradley Maron, MD<\/strong><\/a>, Melvin Sharoky, MD Professor of Medicine and Co-Executive Director of UM-IHC. \u201cBut the pace of AI development is outrunning the practical training needed by the clinicians who must use it. To realize the full potential of these tools, we need to equip practitioners with the knowledge to responsibly and successfully integrate them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-Tools-in-EHR_102825_A7401999.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"405\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-Tools-in-EHR_102825_A7401999.jpg\" alt=\"Female audience members stands to ask a question of two panelists at the podium.\" class=\"wp-image-21655 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 550px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 550\/405;width:495px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think this information is really needed within the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS),\u201d said participant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/profiles\/anders-megan\/\"><strong>Megan Anders, MD, MS<\/strong><\/a>, UMSOM Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice Chair for Safety and Quality in Anesthesiology. \u201cI came because there is a tremendous amount of both potential and current use of AI across the system, and there\u2019s an opportunity for getting people the education they need to implement and research with this technology responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many clinicians are already using AI in their practices. In a recent survey of American College of Radiology members, 33 percent said they adopted AI radiology tools immediately as they became available, and 20 percent predicted they would use them in the next five years, said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/profiles\/doo-florence-xini\/\"><strong>Florence Xini Doo, MD<\/strong><\/a>, a UMSOM Assistant Professor of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, and Director of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/um2ii\">Innovation for the Medical Intelligent Imaging<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>UM2ii<\/strong>) Center. She was one of eight UM-IHC faculty members presenting at the event. \u201cOver half of radiologists are using AI on clinical images today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Taxonomy of AI in the Clinic<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AI tools in healthcare fall into two main categories, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/profiles\/goodman-katherine\/\"><strong>Katherine Goodman, PhD, JD<\/strong><\/a>, UMSOM Assistant Professor of Epidemiology &amp; Public Health, who provided a taxonomy of the AI tools already in use or in development. Many tools currently used in the clinic are forms of predictive AI, technologies that mostly take numerical inputs, such as vital signs, and produce numerical outputs, such as risk scores, she said. Many predictive AI technologies might not have been called \u201cAI\u201d until recently, Dr. Goodman added, with the exception of the powerful image analysis tools used in radiology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-Tools-in-EHR_102825_A7401882.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"344\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-Tools-in-EHR_102825_A7401882.jpg\" alt=\"Female panelist at podium in front of the room speaks to the audience.\" class=\"wp-image-21654 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 550px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 550\/344;width:495px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the second, newer category of AI are generative AI tools, Dr. Goodman said, which include the Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. More flexible than predictive AI, generative AI takes natural, human language inputs and produces outputs that read as human, enabling applications such as ambient scribes, software that listens to clinician-patient interactions and automatically produces notes for the clinician.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambient scribes are currently used in millions of annual visits in the U.S., and the same technology could soon power more flexible pre-visit patient screening, resource allocation analysis on a healthcare systems-wide scale, and, eventually, assist clinicians in making differential diagnoses, according to presentations by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/cid\/\"><strong>Daniel Morgan, MD, MS<\/strong><\/a>, UMSOM Professor of Epidemiology &amp; Public Health and Director of the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/cid\/\">Center for Innovation in Diagnosis<\/a><\/strong>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/profiles\/baghdadi-jonathan\/\"><strong>Jonathan Baghdadi, MD, PhD<\/strong><\/a>, UMSOM Associate Professor of Epidemiology &amp; Public Health.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/um-ihcs-dr-katarina-zeder-honored-with-innovative-research-award\/\"><strong>Katarina Zeder, MD, PhD<\/strong><\/a>, a faculty member at UM-IHC, also participated in a panel discussion at the event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Challenges Facing Transformational AI in Healthcare<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The presenters also discussed the limitations and potential challenges of using generative AI tools in the clinic. \u201cData is really the food or fuel for AI,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umms.org\/about\/leadership\/warren-dsouza\"><strong>Warren D&#8217;Souza, PhD, MBA, FAAPM<\/strong><\/a>, UM-IHC Co-Director and Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer for UMMS, which makes access to Electronic Health Records crucial for the development of impactful generative AI tools. But ensuring AI access to patient records is HIPAA law-compliant is an active area of research at UM-IHC, he added, which works with the UMMS EHR database.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-Tools-in-EHR_102825_A7401702-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-Tools-in-EHR_102825_A7401702-1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Warren D'Souza pointing to the presentation screen.\" class=\"wp-image-21652 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 3000px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 3000\/2000;width:495px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Warren D&#8217;Souza<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>They also cautioned about caveats: Significant work remains for both biomedical researchers and AI developers to ensure the technologies can be trusted to produce accurate responses, AI technologies are known to sometimes \u201challucinate,\u201d for example, confidently presenting responses that appear factual but are not necessarily evidence-based, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/biology.umd.edu\/people\/dr-joshua-weitz\"><strong>Joshua Weitz, PhD<\/strong><\/a>, Professor of Biology and Clark Leadership Chair in Data Analytics at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/umd.edu\">University of Maryland, College Park<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>UMCP<\/strong>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe keep talking about AI technologies as if they are magical tools,\u201d he said. \u201cBut these tools are evolving and have flaws.\u201d The challenge is for healthcare providers to learn both how to most effectively use AI tools and how to identify and recognize flaws, while the larger, systemic challenge is building a relationship between providers, healthcare systems, and AI developers that ensures the technologies continue to improve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not enough to build these tools,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/innovate.umd.edu\/directory\/adam-porter\"><strong>Adam Porter, PhD<\/strong><\/a>, UMCP Professor of Computer Science and Co-Executive Director for UM-IHC. \u201cWe must empower the clinical workforce to gain the practical expertise required to critically appraise, ethically deploy, and safely manage AI systems.
