{"id":20208,"date":"2025-07-02T18:04:25","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T18:04:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/?p=20208"},"modified":"2025-07-02T18:04:28","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T18:04:28","slug":"university-of-maryland-announces-patrick-oshea-as-next-research-vice-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/university-of-maryland-announces-patrick-oshea-as-next-research-vice-president\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Maryland Announces Patrick O&#8217;Shea as Next Research Vice President"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Published in <a href=\"https:\/\/dbknews.com\/2025\/06\/30\/umd-patrick-oshea-research-vice-president\/\">The Diamondback<\/a><\/strong>    |     <strong>July 1, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>University of Maryland,<\/strong> <strong>College Park <strong>(<strong>UMCP<\/strong>)<\/strong> <\/strong>and <strong>University of Maryland, Baltimore (<strong>UMB<\/strong>) <\/strong>named Patrick O\u2019Shea as their next research vice president, this university announced in a news release Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Shea, who was this university\u2019s vice president for research from 2011 to 2016, will manage research initiatives at UMCP and UMB campuses in collaboration with both universities\u2019 presidents, according to the announcement. He is set to step back into the role on July 1, succeeding Gregory Ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university announced in January that Ball would be stepping down from his position after more than three years.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/New-ADR.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/New-ADR.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20130 lazyload\" style=\"width:556px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Shea is currently this university\u2019s deputy vice president for research and an electrical and computer engineering professor. He also holds positions with the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics and the physics department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He will oversee research in areas such as quantum science, artificial intelligence, data science, national security and biomedical advancement for UMCP and UMB campuses, which together spend about $1.4 billion on research annually, according to Monday\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am honored to step into this role and deeply committed to ensuring that our two universities continue to rise as pinnacles of excellence, taking their places among the leading institutions in the world,\u201d O\u2019Shea wrote in the news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Shea added that his motivation to take on the position stems from his love for the state, the universities and the \u201cmany wonderful colleagues\u201d he has worked with at both campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Shea also previously served as president of University College Cork, Ireland after his first term as vice president for research at this university. He has also worked at Duke University and the University of California Los Alamos National Laboratory, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During O\u2019Shea\u2019s first term as vice president for research, this university acquired a \u201crecord level of funding\u201d from competitive grants and contracts, according to the release.
