{"id":19818,"date":"2025-06-03T15:42:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T15:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/?p=19818"},"modified":"2025-06-03T15:42:55","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T15:42:55","slug":"umb-and-the-maryland-momentum-fund-invest-in-coaptech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/umb-and-the-maryland-momentum-fund-invest-in-coaptech\/","title":{"rendered":"UMB and the Maryland Momentum Fund Invest in CoapTech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Published in <a href=\"https:\/\/elm.umaryland.edu\/announcements\/2025\/UMB-and-the-Maryland-Momentum-Fund-Invest-in-CoapTech.php\">The Elm<\/a><\/strong>  |  <strong>June 2, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coaptech.com\/\"><strong>CoapTech<\/strong><\/a>, a Baltimore-based medical device company that spun out of the School of Medicine, announced the initial close of a Series B funding round, which was led by Good Growth Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm that invests in transformative science and technology, with participation from the <a href=\"https:\/\/momentum.usmd.edu\/\"><strong>University System of Maryland<\/strong> (<strong>USM<\/strong>) <strong>Momentum Fund<\/strong><\/a> and the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/umaryland.edu\">University of Maryland, Baltimore <\/a><\/strong>(<strong>UMB<\/strong>), a previous investor. Additional funds joining the round included NuFund, TEDCO, The Abell Foundation, and Ecphora Capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The round will support commercial expansion of CoapTech\u2019s PUMA System, which enables novel minimally invasive surgical procedures in hollow organs using point-of-care ultrasound. Previously, it was unsafe or impossible to use ultrasound in air-filled parts of the body. The Food and Drug Administration-cleared PUMA-G System,<sup>&nbsp;<\/sup>which is the first and only device enabling bedside ultrasound-based placement of gastrostomy feeding tubes, has been proven to significantly reduce per-patient hospital cost and ICU length of stay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CoapTech is located in Baltimore&#8217;s Port Covington and collaborates with The LaunchPort, a medtech manufacturing accelerator in Port Covington, to manufacture its magnetic balloon catheter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UMB has invested in CoapTech\u2019s prior funding rounds through its technology transfer arm, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/umventures.org\">UM Ventures<\/a><\/strong>, Baltimore.
