Pines and <a href=\"https:\/\/umaryland.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Maryland, Baltimore<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 (<strong>UMB<\/strong>) President Bruce E. Jarrell. <a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/announcing-the-2025-mpower-professors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One of seven professors awarded the prestigious honor earlier this year<\/a>, Dr. Pal is a leading force in the fight against tick-borne diseases.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:7px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A University of Maryland-led team has been awarded a five-year, multimillion-dollar grant to unravel the complex biology of the deer tick and its role in transmitting Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, two of the most prevalent tick-borne diseases in the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grant from the <strong>National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases<\/strong>, part of the <strong>National Institutes of Health<\/strong> (<strong>NIH<\/strong>), will support the continuation of work led by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.umd.edu\/people\/faculty\/dr-utpal-pal\/\">MPower Professor Utpal Pal,<\/a><\/strong>\u202fa professor in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.umd.edu\/home\/\">Department of Veterinary Medicine <\/a><\/strong>in the<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/agnr.umd.edu\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>College of Agriculture and Natural Resources<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>at UMCP. He leads a multi-institutional team of researchers seeking to understand and leverage the unique molecular-level interactions between ticks and their hosts to develop potential vaccines and therapeutics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pal previously discovered that ticks don\u2019t just passively carry disease-causing bacteria, but respond at a molecular level to signals from infected animals they feed on\u2014the first discovery of a molecular communication system between two very different species that regulates key biological functions in one of them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That study showed when a tick takes a blood meal, specific proteins and hormones in the host\u2019s blood signal the tick that the host is infected with pathogens, which influences the tick\u2019s development, as well as how it metabolizes meals, fights off microbes, and ultimately, how effectively it can transmit diseases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grant will enable researchers from Pal\u2019s lab and partner institutions\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>University of Maryland School of Medicine<\/strong><\/a>, Yale University and the University of Minnesota\u2014to focus on understanding the molecular signaling pathways and to develop new, advanced genetic techniques to target key components of the pathways. The research may lead to innovative anti-tick vaccines that can block tick engorgement and pathogen transmission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy investigating these novel pathways, we aim to identify new ways to disrupt the tick\u2019s life cycle and prevent the spread of diseases like Lyme disease and anaplasmosis,\u201d Pal said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of this initiative, the team will also develop new genetic tools for expanding this research; findings will be shared through open-source platforms that ensure their discoveries contribute to a broader scientific community and inspire new avenues of research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate goal of our study is twofold,\u201d Pal said, \u201cto deepen our understanding of tick molecular biology and to pave the way for innovative prevention strategies against Lyme disease and anaplasmosis.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Utpal Pal directs 5-Year, multi-million campaign to fight transmission<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":160,"featured_media":19552,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[196,11,20],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19551","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home","category-in-the-press","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.7 -
