{"id":17489,"date":"2024-08-02T19:04:10","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T19:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/?p=17489"},"modified":"2024-08-16T14:47:16","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T14:47:16","slug":"um-institute-for-health-computing-to-anchor-metro-redevelopment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/um-institute-for-health-computing-to-anchor-metro-redevelopment\/","title":{"rendered":"UM Institute for Health Computing to Anchor Metro Redevelopment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Published on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umaryland.edu\/news\/archived-news\/august-2024\/um-institute-for-health-computing-to-anchor-n-bethesda-metro-redevelopment.php\">UMB website<\/a><\/strong>    |       <strong>August 2, 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A life sciences hub \u2014 featuring the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ihc.umd.edu\">University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>UM-IHC<\/strong>) \u2014 is slated to be part of the North Bethesda Metro station redevelopment proposal announced July 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re here today because metro stations are not just a stop where people get on and off of transit, on buses or trains. They become critical community hubs,\u201d Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) said at a news conference announcing the request for quote. \u201cThey become engines of economic development and opportunity. They become engines of innovation in partnership with the private sector and other parts of the public sector background.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in November 2022, UM-IHC leverages technological advances to create a premier learning health care system that evaluates both de-identified and secure digitized medical health data to improve outcomes for patients across Maryland.\u202fThe institute is a partnership among the <a href=\"http:\/\/umaryland.edu\"><strong>University of Maryland, Baltimore<\/strong> <\/a>(<strong>UMB<\/strong>); the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/umd.edu\">University of Maryland, College Park<\/a><\/strong>; and the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/umms.org\">University of Maryland Medical System<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>UMMS<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The institute is harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and billions of data points from millions of patients in UMMS,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/profiles\/gladwin-mark\/\">Mark T. Gladwin, MD<\/a><\/strong>, the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and dean of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/medschool.umaryland.edu\">University of Maryland School of Medicine<\/a> <\/strong>(<strong>UMSOM<\/strong>) and UMB vice president for medical affairs,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>said after the news conference. Maryland\u2019s system is uniquely set up to provide the data to train the AI because of its diverse population, which will help prevent biases in the AI system, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne whole element of this would be to predict disease  intervene,\u201d Gladwin said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no question that data is the driving force for the way medicine will be practiced in the future, said\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medschool.umaryland.edu\/profiles\/maron-bradley\/\">Bradley Maron, MD<\/a><\/strong>, senior associate dean for precision medicine at UMSOM and co-director of UM-IHC. \u201cAnd, it\u2019s already beginning now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Progress for the Future Home of the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ATsXy7Q7mW4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to accomplish at the institute is using data across all different forms \u2014 whether it be information that&#8217;s captured for the heart in an individual patient, or across an entire medical system based on the kind of a problem that group of patients have \u2014 we want to try to understand how different methods can generate new insights that will allow us to diagnose diseases ahead of time, interact with patients in a much more personalized way, and ultimately align treatment with patients using an approach that is much more precise and intends to improve the way health is managed and the outcomes for the patients that we serve,\u201d Maron said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UM-IHC will anchor the development of the 13.9-acre site, which is planned also to include housing and retail space. The county has $36.6 million in local, state, and federal funding for the infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese funds are extremely competitive,\u201d said <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardin.senate.gov\/\">Sen. Ben Cardin <\/a><\/strong>(D-Maryland). \u201cThey\u2019re not easy to come by \u2014 and your plan, your partnership, your team set you up for success, and we\u2019re glad to be part of that coalition.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UM-IHC is expected to energize research in the life sciences including applied artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, immersive visualization, real-world evidence and adaptive clinical trials, population health, and therapeutic drug discovery. While driving technological advancement, the goal is to also provide critical mass to Maryland\u2019s technology economy.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while breaking ground and construction on the new building will take some time, UM-IHC already has boots on the ground in Montgomery County. The institute has been renting space in the county since January 2024, UMB President<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umaryland.edu\/president\/presidents-biography\/\">Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACS<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0said during the news conference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want you to know we have been physically present here for six months. We are actively present now and rapidly expanding,\u201d Jarrell said. \u201cAnd we will be here expanding even further.
