{"id":17464,"date":"2024-08-12T20:42:52","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T20:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/?p=17464"},"modified":"2024-08-12T20:46:19","modified_gmt":"2024-08-12T20:46:19","slug":"2m-grant-to-help-give-patients-with-substance-use-disorders-a-voice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/2m-grant-to-help-give-patients-with-substance-use-disorders-a-voice\/","title":{"rendered":"$2M Grant to Help Give Patients With Substance Use Disorders a Voice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Published in <a href=\"https:\/\/today.umd.edu\/2m-grant-to-help-give-patients-with-substance-use-disorders-a-voice\">Maryland Today<\/a><\/strong>    |       <strong>August 12, 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From South Africa to Baltimore to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, psychology researcher<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/psyc.umd.edu\/facultyprofile\/magidson\/jessica\"> Jessica Magidson<\/a><\/strong> has spent much of her career studying the struggles of individuals with substance use disorders and devising ways to aid in their recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, with more than $2 million in support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/initiatives\/mpower-professorship\/\">MPower Professor<\/a><\/strong> and director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cesar.umd.edu\/\"><strong>Center for Substance Use, Addiction and Health Research<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(<strong>CESAR<\/strong>)\u00a0is joining with colleagues to give those in recovery a stronger voice in shaping research on substance use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Focusing on several counties hard-hit by the opioid use epidemic in Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore, Magidson and co-principal investigator Sarah Kattakuzhy, an associate professor of psychiatry at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/medschool.umaryland.edu\">University of Maryland School of Medicine<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>UMSOM<\/strong>), will recruit 15 Marylanders from rural areas to join a \u201cpatient advisory committee\u201d that will guide the grant\u2019s research efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople with substance use disorders are often neglected by the research process, and even more so when they live in rural communities,\u201d Magidson said. \u201cThis project will hopefully become a national model for consultation for other experts conducting research in this space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers\u2014including CESAR Deputy Director of Policy Erin Artigiani, and Associate Professor of Psychiatry Eric Weintraub, Associate Professor of Family and Community Health Marik Moen, and School of Social Work Professor Jodi Frey from UMSOM, located at the University of Maryland, Baltimore\u2014will work with committee members to understand what programs currently are available for individuals with substance use disorder, and where they may be falling short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrea L\u00f3pez, an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology, will lend her interviewing and observational expertise to this portion of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMixed methods and interdisciplinary approaches only strengthen our ability to understand complex social issues,\u201d L\u00f3pez said. \u201cBy bringing in methods from medical anthropology, we expand our commitment to understanding the structural, social and environmental factors that impact marginalized populations in everyday contexts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firsthand insights from patients are incredibly valuable to studies of substance use, the researchers say, as the road to recovery often isn\u2019t linear, and patients\u2019 histories with drug use can be complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of the research that we&#8217;ve done really underscores how many kinds of drugs people can be exposed to,\u201d explained Artigiani. \u201cWhat they&#8217;re exposed to\u2014and whether they knew they were taking those kinds of drugs, or they were inadvertently exposed to them\u2014can have a big impact on what kind of services they need, what kind of treatment might be most effective for them, and what kind of ongoing support they may need in their recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CESAR has already had insight into what this \u201cpolysubstance use\u201d phenomenon looks like in rural areas. Magidson and Kattakuzhy have been leading a peer-based study using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/today.umd.edu\/roads-to-recovery\">mobile treatment units in Caroline County<\/a>&nbsp;for nearly two years, and Artigiani is a co-investigator on a project that collects anonymized electronic health record data and retests patient urine specimens for a variety of substances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese rural communities are getting hit really, really hard by polysubstance use\u2014it&#8217;s not just opioids; it&#8217;s opioids, methamphetamine, alcohol and other substances;\u201d Magidson said. \u201cWe find that services are even more fragmented or poorly coordinated when people are seeking services for multiple substance use disorders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding and testing new ways to address these issues are the final aims of the study, and again, the patient advisory committee will play a substantial role.
