{"id":15029,"date":"2023-10-20T17:43:39","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T17:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/?p=15029"},"modified":"2023-10-20T17:54:19","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T17:54:19","slug":"umcp-fischell-institute-welcomes-three-new-mpower-fellows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mpower.maryland.edu\/umcp-fischell-institute-welcomes-three-new-mpower-fellows\/","title":{"rendered":"UMCP Fischell Institute Welcomes Three New MPower Fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(MPower Fellows pictured <strong>L<\/strong> to <strong>R<\/strong>: <strong>Arsalan Siddiqui<\/strong>,<strong> Jason Chen<\/strong>, and <strong>Sam Meyr.<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Published on the <a href=\"https:\/\/fischellinstitute.umd.edu\/\">Fischell Insitute website<\/a>     |   October 19, 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, the Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices welcomed three new <strong>MPowering the State Student Entrepreneurship<\/strong>, or MPower, fellows\u2014<strong>Sam Meyr\u00a0<\/strong>(BIOE \u201923),<strong>\u00a0Arsalan Siddiqui<\/strong>\u00a0(BIOE \u201823), and\u00a0<strong>Jason Chen\u00a0<\/strong>(BIOE \u201823).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fischell Institute established the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fischellinstitute.umd.edu\/mpower-fellows\"><strong>MPowering the State Student Entrepreneurship Fellowship<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2017 to teach students how to transition innovative medical device concepts into great businesses by utilizing programs offered through the University of Maryland\u2013including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mage.umd.edu\/\"><strong>the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0During the fellowship, students partner with the Fischell Foundry to commercialize their innovative medical device idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sam Meyr applied for the fellowship with the goal of building her skills in medical device design and fabrication. She will receive her Master\u2019s in Engineering with a concentration in bioengineering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I pursued bioengineering because I knew I wanted to impact patients directly, but I didn&#8217;t want to be a doctor,&#8221; said Meyr. &#8220;I wanted to be behind the scenes making a greater impact on a total population, through drug or device development.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meyr&#8217;s fellowship project focuses on developing a 3D-printed bone scaffold for critical-sized bone defects, which can be customized to fit unique contours for patients. The bone scaffold is composed of an allograft-based polymer. This project collaborates with BIOE professor&nbsp;Tao Lowe, specifically with graduate student&nbsp;Eman Mirdamadi&nbsp;who is leading this research as part of his Ph.D. thesis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m excited for this project because it has great potential,&#8221; Meyr said. &#8220;It&#8217;s exciting to work on device development and learn from the Fischell Foundry team about the development process of taking an idea to market.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After she graduates, Meyr plans to work in the medical technology industry for a few years to gain a better understanding of patient needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arsalan Siddiqui discovered his passion for bioengineering and biomedical devices during a high school internship in UMD\u2019s Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering, where he developed a new technique for capturing CO\u2082 on space crafts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his senior year of undergraduate study, Siddiqui sought out the fellowship to increase his skills in medical device development and gain experience in starting a company. Siddiqui will receive his Master\u2019s in Engineering with a concentration in bioengineering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI look forward to gaining confidence and experience through the Fischell Institute,\u201d Siddiqui said. &#8220;Learning from these seasoned professionals will be a valuable opportunity for me to further develop my skill set as a biomedical engineer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Siddiqui is working with clinicians at the University of Maryland School of Medicine to develop a safer, more effective internal surgical stapler for end-to-end anastomosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is an interesting project, and I&#8217;m excited to be working with both the Fischell Institute and the University of Maryland School of Medicine,&#8221; he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, Siddiqui plans to attend medical school and eventually start a medical device consulting firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason Chen developed an interest in device prototyping and fabrication during his undergraduate Computer-Aided Design course (BIOE 437). The course empowered him to bring his thoughts to life by modeling them in a 3D environment and then printing those structures out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an MPower fellow, Chen wants to gain hands-on experience with devices while seeking mentorship from the Fischell Foundry engineers&nbsp;<strong>Kevin Aroom<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>John Rzasa<\/strong>. Chen will receive his Master of Engineering degree with a concentration in robotics.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Without the fellowship, I would not be able to further work on my skills and gain a much deeper understanding of device prototyping and validation,&#8221; he said. \u201cI am grateful to have the opportunity to learn from and work with some of the smartest engineers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chen\u2019s project is a low-cost, triple-needle injector device. This project complements Affiliate Fellow and BIOE Assistant Professor&nbsp;<strong>Jenna Mueller<\/strong>\u2019s research on ethylcellulose ethanol, which shows promise as a potential alternative to current ablation therapies against cervical cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The triple-needle injector device was pioneered by recent MPower fellow graduate&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fischellinstitute.umd.edu\/news\/story\/mpower-fellow-spotlight-david-garvey\">David Garvey<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;Chen and Mueller are now working together on constructing and fully characterizing an improved&nbsp;model of the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, Chen aims to gain biotech industry experience in medical device automation and drug manufacturing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meet the undergraduates selected for this year&#8217;s MPowering the State Student Entrepreneurship Fellowship <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":160,"featured_media":15030,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-15029","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.7 -
